Top 8 Weirdest Laws in the State of California

When most of us think about California state laws, we think about the big ones that make sense. Driving drunk can cause devastating crashes, so it’s against the law. You aren’t allowed to vandalize or steal someone else’s property, and you, of course, can’t assault people.

And then there are the laws that make less sense and may seem to serve no purpose at all. Read on to discover the top eight weirdest laws still in effect in the state of California.

1. Women Can’t Drive in Housecoats

If you’re a lady planning on running some early-morning errands in California, make sure you’re fully dressed before you leave the house. Throughout the state of California, it’s illegal for women to drive while wearing housecoats. Men remain free to venture out in whatever attire best suits them.

2. Autonomous Vehicle Speed Limit

Our next silly law is a more recent addition to the California law books. Autonomous vehicles aren’t legally allowed to drive more than 60 miles per hour anywhere in the state of California.

3. Only Cars in the Garage

On the subject of cars, if you live in Long Beach, you had better give your vehicle its own dedicated space. It’s illegal to store anything except cars in a garage within the Long Beach city limits. San Francisco has a similar law regarding apartment complex and hotel parking garages.

4. No High Kite Flying

Let’s go fly a kite, but not up to the highest heights in Walnut! The city has a law prohibiting anyone from flying a kite more than ten feet off the ground.

5. Take Cowboy Boots Seriously

The people of Blythe, California, take the concept of cowboy boots very seriously. It’s illegal to wear cowboy boots unless you own at least two cows. After all, they’re not called “cute with a sundress boots,” people!

6. No Camel Walking

If you live in Palm Springs, California, you need to be careful about where and when you take your camel out for a walk. It’s illegal to walk a camel down Palm Canyon Drive between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. Walking on other streets or during other times, however, appears to be perfectly legal.

7. Profanity-Free Mini Golf

We know that missing that hole-in-one by an inch in mini golf can be frustrating, but in Long Beach, you’d better keep that irritation under control. Cursing on a mini golf course is illegal in Long Beach. We recommend trying alternatives like “dagnabit,” “son of a nutcracker,” or “fiddlesticks.”

8. No Moth Hunting

Los Angeles is dedicated to protecting our friends the moths from insidious plots. Within the city limits, it’s illegal to hunt moths under street lamps. You have to at least give the little guys a fighting chance, so if you must hunt moths, stick to daylight hours.

Get Defense from Silly Laws

Oftentimes, laws that might have been put in place decades ago get forgotten and left on the books. These laws seem silly out of context, and the truth is they’re rarely, if ever, actually enforced. But it can be fun to remind your friends to leave moths alone during your evening strolls in Los Angeles, California.
